The Los Angeles Chargers struck gold on Day 2 of the 2024 NFL Draft with the selection of wide receiver Ladd McConkey.
Through two seasons, McConkey has established himself as a key contributor in the Chargers’ offense. The Georgia product tallied 82 receptions for 1,149 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, and though 2025 was a bit of a step back, McConkey was still effective, leading the team in yards (789) and touchdowns (6).
Heading into 2026, McConkey is set to reprise his role as the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Justin Herbert, and head coach Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel are expecting a big-time breakout campaign from their young pass-catcher.
Harbaugh and McDaniel expect 2026 to be McConkey’s best year
During a press conference at the Chargers’ mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, Harbaugh said he and McDaniel expect McConkey to turn in the best year of his career in 2026.
“I think Mike [McDaniel] said it, he said it to them, potential for the best year he’s [McConkey has] ever had in pro football,” Harbaugh said via Kris Rhim of ESPN. “I see it the same way.”
McConkey’s savvy route-running and speed make him a perfect fit for a McDaniel-led offense. Though most of the 24-year-old’s production comes from the slot, he can also move outside and make a difference there.
The most compelling aspect of McConkey’s game is his work in the intermediate game. The former second-round pick hauled in 19 receptions with zero drops from 10-19 yards last year, along with a 67.9% completion rate when targeted.
Overall, McDaniel should be able to get the most out of McConkey and his versatility. Don’t be surprised if the 6-foot receiver from Georgia posts career highs across the board this season and earns a mega extension next offseason.
