Jahmyr Gibbs sent conflicting message about Lions contract talks after missing 5th practice
Monday marked the Detroit Lions‘ fifth training camp practice before the 2026 season. It also marked superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs’ fifth straight absence from training camp as he stages a hold-in over hopeful new contract talks with the franchise. The three-time Pro Bowler is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, with a fifth-year team option already extended to him for 2027.
After Monday’s practice, Gibbs got the opportunity to set the record straight about what he wants from the Lions and his long-term future with Detroit. In essence, he was asked about what it would take to get him to start participating in training camp beyond watching from afar.
He, uh, pretty much sent a very contradictory message about his desires, seemingly without even realizing it.

“Only time will tell,” [Jahmyr] Gibbs said when asked when he’ll be back in action after watching most of practice for the second straight day.
Asked if he needs a new contract before returning, Gibbs said, “Nah, it’s not about that.”
So, “only time will tell” regarding Gibbs coming back to the Lions, an apparent reference to it depending on when he gets a new deal he likes. But also, “it’s not about that,” in regard to a new contract? Sure, that totally makes sense and isn’t a conflicting message at all. (C’mon now.)
Godspeed to the Lions and Gibbs, because it’s not clear what anyone actually wants in this situation right now. Here’s hoping they find some sort of middle ground, and soon.
