Iowa football media member high on WR room entering 2026

Over the past five years, Iowa has been successful at churning out production at almost every position on offense. Whether it was Mark Gronowski guiding the quarterback room in 2025 or Kaleb Johnson running wild in 2024, every offensive position has had a moment to shine. The glaring omission is the wide receiver room.
The Hawkeyes haven’t had a wide receiver eclipse 500 receiving yards in a single season since 2019. Jacob Gill’s 411 yards in 2024 were the season-high for an Iowa wide receiver this decade. Despite bringing in talented transfer options and recruiting fairly well, the production hasn’t translated onto the field recently.
Heading into the 2026 season, Iowa boasts potentially its most talented and deep wide receiver room since 2019. Led by juniors Reece Vander Zee and Dayton Howard, alongside transfer sophomore Tony Diaz, excitement is buzzing around that room.
David Eickholt of 247Sports is leading the charge when it comes to praise for the wide receivers. Speaking on CBS Sports with Chris Hassel and Chip Patterson, Eickholt had the following to say about the receivers in 2026.
“This feels like the best the room has been in over ten years,” Eickholt said. “They get Reece Vander Zee back, who is a legitimiate X weapon. Kind of a downfield guy, can be a big red zone threat.”
He was especially high on Diaz’s ability to make an immediate impact and on the room’s potential as a whole.
“This is a guy that brings a different level of swagger to the room,” Eickholt said about Diaz. “His physicality on those 50/50 passes, his explosiveness off the line of scrimmage.”
“This finally feels like the wide receiver room that you can be a little more creative with in that passing offense”
The biggest question mark about Iowa’s offense is if this is the year that the wide receivers can finally step up.

If Eickholt’s prediction comes to fruition, whoever wins the quarterback competition will have plenty of weapons to play with. The running back room is deep and chock-full of talent. DJ Vonnahme leads a tight end room with plenty of upside. And the offensive line should remain an elite unit.
The wide receivers will be under some pressure to live up to expectations in 2026. As Eickholt mentioned, there’s no doubting the talent and upside of the room. The only question is if that talent can translate to consistent results on the field. If it can, the Hawkeyes could be poised for a huge season.
