Recent form
England have not been convincing so far. They started the tournament with a brilliant 4-2 win over Croatia but the following three games have left a lot to be desired. Thomas Tuchel says his side will get better as the tournament progresses and they must be better against the co-hosts.
By contrast, Mexico have been brilliant. They have won every game and have looked one of the stand-out teams at the tournament. They have not conceded a single goal, and given the altitude advantage and home fans, they could be slight favourites.
What’s been said?
England boss Thomas Tuchel: “We feel it [the altitude], even if we don’t train. I felt a slight headache in the hotel room throughout the day and didn’t sleep as well as the days before but nothing that you cannot handle and cannot adapt to.
“I think the players felt it in the first minutes of the training session and the longer it went on, they could cope with it better. It is just what it is. We cannot physically adapt, it’s just impossible.”
Mexico manager Javier Aguirre: “The altitude? I don’t focus on that, it’s 11 vs. 11, the referee is there, so I don’t think about things like that. We’re both going to try and score in each other’s nets.”
