Ecuador will feel confident about getting its first win of the World Cup on the board against a Curaçao team coming off the back of a 7-1 mauling when they meet on Saturday. Curaçao was made to appreciate the step up in competition it’s facing this summer after suffering such a humbling in its debut against one of the world’s elite. Dick Advocaat could feasibly make a number of changes to his team, though it’s worth noting his side did almost manage to make it to half-time level.
Ecuador should represent a much more realistic opponent on paper after it, too, suffered defeat in its opener, conceding in the 90th minute to lose 1-0 to the Ivory Coast. If La Tricolor is to have any chance of reaching the World Cup’s last 32, a win over the Blue Wave this weekend is absolutely essential.
Defeat to the Elephants marked just the second loss Sebastian Beccacece’s side has suffered since he took charge of the team almost two years ago. However, that result also exposed Ecuador’s lack of bite, despite going agonizingly close to scoring against the Ivory Coast on more than one occasion.
