The Boston Red Sox made a notable one-for-one trade over the weekend, sending pitcher Connelly Early to the Washington Nationals in exchange for infielder Curtis Mead.

Mead is in the middle of a career season where he is slashing .254/.322/.500 with 17 home runs and 48 RBIs, and he comes to a Red Sox team gearing up for a playoff push down the stretch. Boston has won six straight series after winning two out of three against the Blue Jays and now hold the second wild card spot in the American League.

While Boston has gotten contributions from all over the lineup, Mead will be another meaningful piece down the stretch.

Here’s what you should know about Boston’s new infielder.

What Curtis Mead brings to Red Sox

With Mead, the Red Sox are getting a hitter who is in the midst of a breakout season. In 2025, he managed just a .620 OPS while bouncing between Tampa Bay and Chicago, but his 2026 campaign in Washington proved to be a true turnaround. Before being acquired by Boston ahead of the trade deadline, Mead slashed .254/.352/.500 with 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, and an .852 OPS (133 OPS+) over 87 games for the Nationals.

The 25-year-old infielder gives Boston right-handed pop and versatile corner-infield depth (primarily at second and third base) to bolster a lineup seeking a midseason surge. While his defensive metrics at the corners remain a work in progress, his elevated walk rate and underlying power metrics suggest his offensive output is a genuine step forward.

As Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow said, it was a tough trade to make, especially with sending a young pitcher in Early the other way. But Mead makes the Red Sox a better team both immediately and in the future.

“Any time you give up a player like Connelly Early, it’s really tough,” Breslow said to the media. “But, looking at our roster, looking at our needs, we felt like this was something that makes us better.”

Breslow said the Red Sox feel like they are getting a player who continues to break out in 2026, and he will help Boston not only this season, but beyond. Boston continues to get contributions throughout the lineup on offense, and Mead is another player who can make a big impact on any given night.

For a team with legitimate aspirations come October, that’s exactly what you need.
