The Boston Red Sox are starting Brayan Bello on Thursday as opposed to using an opener and having him serve as the bulk pitcher.

Bello did not need an opener last year and came out of the bullpen just once. However, this season, his numbers with and without an opener are very different. He has struggled as a starter, but thrived as a bulk pitcher. However, Chad Tracy has decided to start him on Thursday and explained the decision before the game.

“It just feels like for us to be successful, we need Bello to start,” Tracy told reporters in a clip posted by WEEI. “We can beat a dead horse with this. We start him, but it doesn’t go well. The opener doesn’t do well. Why didn’t you open? It’s like, at the end of the day, we need this guy to pitch. We had him in an outing against the (Cleveland Guardians), where he faced eight lefties. He’s worked very hard in between starts over the last couple of weeks to work on arm slot and different things to solve for lefties. We’ve got to put him out there. There’s no clear answer for that and he’s got to go out there and pitch.”

It sounds like Tracy knows that no matter how they deploy Bello, if things do not go well, there will be questions about the decision. He does not seem to be looking too deeply into his plist with and without an opener, but the differences are drastic.

His ERA as a starter this year is 9.68. As a bulk pitcher, he has a 0.71 ERA. In 30 2/3 innings as a starter, he has issued 18 walks and has just 18 strikeouts. In 25 1/3 innings behind an opener, he has 22 strikeouts and just three walks.

Last season, Bello had a 3.35 ERA. It was the best year of his career, and Tracy seems to believe he can be that pitcher again. He is not sold on the idea that Bello needs an opener and is trusting he will get back on track as a starter.
