MIAMI -With the Miami Heat turning the page to the Giannis Antetokounmpo era, the star himself is going through a massive change after the blockbuster trade was made official in July. As Antetokounmpo leads the Heat alongside Bam Adebayo, the two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) would provide insight into where his head is at heading into training camp and the preseason.
Antetokounmpo had been honest in admitting that adjustments were needed from himself, and while being ecstatic for the new opportunity in Miami, he needed to get used to a new environment after spending 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks. Speaking Monday at the Heat’s media day, Antetokounmpo said that he feels “in a good place” ahead of Tuesday’s start to training camp at Florida Atlantic University (FAU)
“Obviously, still weird. You know, a lot of new faces, new teammates, new lockers, new ideas, new fans, new city, new route to practice, but I’m in a good place. I’m in a very, very good place,” Antetokounmpo said. “Feel like these last two weeks, just being around the team and, like, playing pickups, doing the conditioning test together.”

“I feel like it helped me a lot to kind of immerse myself in the culture, I feel like I said it’s a culture that fits my personality, I don’t have to cheat the game, and I’m excited,” Antetokounmpo continued. “I can see the excitement also in the coaching staff, my teammates. So that really makes me more excited, and things will go well. I’m excited.”

Heat’s Giannis Antetokounmpo on where he thrives best
To say Antetokounmpo left his mark with the Bucks is an understatement, as he won two MVPs, led the team to its first NBA championship in 2021, and a plethora of other accomplishments. Now in an “uncomfortable” situation in adapting to a new team, Antetokounmpo believes that’s the type of environment where he thrives.
“I know that I thrive where I’m somewhere uncomfortable, you know. This is all new for me,” Antetokounmpo said. “I’m trying to learn defenses, I’m trying to learn offenses, I’m trying to fit in the locker room with new faces, I’m trying to be able to play with players that I’ve never played before. It’s all new for me. It’s exciting. I know that I’m going to put in the work. Succeed or fail, I’m going to fail by working, or succeed by working. And the goal is to win a championship, man.”
“Like that’s the goal,” Antetokounmpo continued. “There’s so so many players that have played here and been successful, and I want to be part of that. I know what I have in front of me, which is today and this year. I’m going to focus on right now. How can I be the best that I could be right now, and hopefully I can leave my mark within this organization…I want to be able, like, when looking back 2, 3, 5, 10 years from now, like, okay, I made that decision.”

Last season, Antetokounmpo averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds, and 5.4 assists, while shooting 62.4 percent from the field in 36 games. In what was a frustrating final season for Antetokounmpo with injuries, the 31-year-old looks to put together a mostly healthy season, as before that last year, he averaged at least 30 points and 11 rebounds in three consecutive years.
At any rate, Antetokounmpo looks to continue to adapt to Miami with the start of training camp on Tuesday, ending on Friday at FAU.
