It’s been just over a year since the Boston Red Sox pulled off one of the most surprising blockbuster trades in recent history, shipping three-time All-Star Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants.

Boston dealt Devers just one year after the 29-year-old slugger signed a 10-year, $313 million extension. Devers was off to a hot start last season with the Red Sox after being named an All-Star in 2024, slashing .272/.401/.504 with 15 home runs and 58 runs batted in across 73 games, but tension had grown since the signing of Alex Bregman.

The Devers trade has not worked out as well as either side had hoped. The 10-year veteran has not seen the same level of success in San Francisco as he did in Boston, while the Red Sox flipped three of the players they received in the Devers trade, which has not worked out well.

The Giants have struggled more this season than the Red Sox, sitting toward the bottom of the NL West with a disappointing 29-43 record, but have made it known they are willing to sell, unlike the Red Sox. ESPN’s Buster Olney reported that San Francisco is open to offers for any of its three highest-paid position players, including Devers.

“The Giants are open to offers for their three highest-paid position players — Rafael Devers, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman — among other obvious trade candidates, like Luis Arraez and Robbie Ray,” Olney shared in a post to X on Monday.

Though Devers’ batting average has taken a hit this season amid his struggles, the former Red Sox star still has plenty of power and is leading the league with 21 doubles.

It’s unclear whether the Giants will deal the slugger before the trade deadline, especially with his massive contract. Still, it’s interesting how Devers could be potentially traded again for the second time in two years.
