Former Tennessee baseball pitcher agrees to historic MLB contract

Cincinnati and pitcher Chase Burns agreed to a historic seven-year, $105 million contract extension during the 2026 MLB season, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
The contract is the largest for a pitcher with less than four years of MLB service.
“Sources told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand that the Reds and Burns are in agreement Thursday on a seven-year, $105 million contract that will begin in 2027 and run through 2033,” Mark Sheldon of MLB.com said. “There are no options or deferrals included.”
Burns played at Tennessee from 2022-23 before transferring to Wake Forest in 2024. He was selected No. 2 overall in the first round of the 2024 MLB draft by Cincinnati.
Tennessee won the 2022 SEC Tournament and regular-season championship, and advanced to the 2023 College World Series.
Burns (13-5) appeared in 35 games, including 22 starts, at Tennessee. He recorded a 3.54 ERA, 217 strikeouts and two saves in 152.1 innings.
