Fir filed against Punjab Kings all-rounder Shashank Singh over assault allegations
A criminal case has been registered against Punjab Kings cricketer Shashank Singh after he was accused of allegedly physically assaulting and verbally abusing his cook.
The case implicates Shashank along with his father, Shailesh Singh, a retired Special Director General of Police, after their domestic cook accused them of assault, verbal abuse, and confining him against his will.
The First Information Report (FIR) was filed at Ratibad Police Station in Bhopal on Monday, following a complaint submitted by 31-year-old Vipendra Singh Tomar, originally from the Rewa district, who had recently relocated to the city to take up work at the family’s Nilbad residence.
A third individual, the family’s driver, identified as Mishra, has also been listed as a co-accused, according to The New Indian Express.
Police records indicate Tomar was hired on June 25 with a promised monthly salary of Rs 15,000, along with free meals, lodging, and loosely worded promises of help securing government employment down the line.
According to his complaint, tensions began building almost immediately, with repeated disputes arising over the standard of cooking.
When he attempted to quit and return home, things reportedly took a turn for the worse. Tomar claims his phone was forcibly taken away to stop him from reaching out to anyone, after which he locked himself in a room out of fear for his safety.
He further alleged that the trio broke into the room, physically assaulted him, and threw him out of the property. The local police have reportedly found visible injury marks on his face and body after the victim was sent for a medical examination.
What are the legal cases filed against Shashank Singh?
The Ratibad Police have booked the accused under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which cover obscene acts and abuse, voluntarily causing hurt, and shared criminal responsibility.
What did Shashank Singh say about the FIR?
Shashank strongly denied the claims, insisting the household never held anyone hostage. He alleged that Tomar had arrived under the pretence of being a trained cook but actually had no cooking skills, instead spending his time filming videos and photos around the property.
“No, we didn’t hold him hostage… He indeed arrived claiming to be a cook, but he wasn’t a cook at all” he told ANI.
“He didn’t know how to cook; he was just here to have fun, taking videos and photos, and even going into my room… Since he was doing things like that, I suspect he came with the intention of stealing.
“We are very fortunate that, from what we’ve checked so far, nothing has been stolen… It is true that his phone contained videos and photos of the house, so my mother had him delete them because they were very private…”
Shashank maintained that no police contact had been made with them so far, and firmly stated that physical confrontation, or even abusive language, simply isn’t part of his character.
“The police haven’t approached us so far. When we caught him taking photos and videos, my sister suggested dialing 100. But he pleaded, and I let him go…,” he said.
“It is possible that someone might level such allegations against me… I believe that anyone who knows me, knows that a physical altercation is completely out of the question for me. I hesitate even to use abusive language, so I certainly couldn’t do something like that. I don’t think I need to offer any justification regarding this.”

A difficult season on the field as well for Shashank Singh
Shashank had an underwhelming 2026 IPL season. Across 12 matches, he managed just 132 runs at a strike rate of 188.57.
However, it would be unwise to conclude before the investigation runs its course. Nonetheless, what’s clear is that this controversy couldn’t have come at a worse time for a player already under pressure to rediscover his form.
