Fans celebrate Argentina win in Buenos Aires, clashes elsewhere

Spontaneous celebrations broke out in Argentina after the national team’s dramatic 3-2 win over Egypt on Tuesday to reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup.

In the capital Buenos Aires, several thousand people gathered around the Obelisk to celebrate Lionel Messi and his team-mates. Well into the evening, they turned parts of the city centre into a party zone.

It was above all the way Argentina team turned the game around in the closing minutes after trailing 2-0 that sent the fans into a frenzy and sparked hope for more.

The events in the provincial capital of San Miguel de Tucumán, however, saw the celebrations quickly turn into violence.

According to media reports, clashes broke out between fans and the police, and security forces used rubber bullets to clear the area.

Five people were arrested and two police officers were injured, the La Gaceta newspaper said.
