Mike Boynton Jr.’s fifth and final assistant coach on his Michigan basketball staff is officially in place.
The program announced Monday the hiring of Dylan Murphy, a former NBA G League head coach who’s spent the last eight years with the Orlando Magic organization.
During his time with the Magic, Murphy has served a variety of roles and moved up the ranks, going from a basketball operations analyst to an NBA assistant coach to head coach of Orlando’s G League affiliate, the Osceola Magic.
“Michigan is one of the premier programs in college basketball, and the opportunity to help develop student-athletes at a place with such a rich tradition and championship expectations is truly special,” Murphy said in a statement.
“I’m grateful to the Orlando Magic organization for eight incredible years, and I look forward to helping our players grow on and off the court while competing for championships.”
Murphy arrives in Ann Arbor after leading the Osceola Magic to a first-place finish in the G League’s Eastern Conference and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs each of the last three years. During his tenure, the Magic went 70-34 and reached the G League Finals in 2025. He also earned G League Coach of the Month honors in March 2025 and coached Orlando’s Summer League team in 2024.
Before that, Murphy spent five seasons with the NBA’s Magic, including three years as an assistant under Steve Clifford and Jamahl Mosely and two years as a basketball operations analyst who focused on scouting and game prep.
A basketball blogger-turned-coach who graduated from Columbia in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in classics, Murphy got his start with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants in the NBA Development League (now known as the G League), where he served as an assistant coach from 2013-16.
Murphy’s résumé includes stints as a Development League scout for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks (2016-17) and as a graduate assistant at Ball State (2018), which is the only college basketball experience he has.
“Dylan has earned tremendous respect throughout basketball because of the way he develops players and builds relationships,” Boynton said in a statement. “He brings valuable experience from both the NBA and G League, and his ability to combine teaching, analytics and communication will have an immediate impact on our program.
“Just as importantly, he shares our values and our vision for what Michigan basketball should be.”
Murphy is the second external hire Boynton has made since being named Michigan’s new head coach last month, along with former longtime Brown head coach Mike Martin. The other assistants are Akeem Miskdeen and Kyle Church, two holdovers from former coach Dusty May’s staff, and KT Harrell, who was promoted by Boynton from his director of basketball operations role.
