The Los Angeles Dodgers are in the race to make a splash at the trade deadline, but their most likely moves tend to come on the margins.
As a rotational outfielder, Alex Call has been about what the Dodgers would hope, helping out all over the outfield and providing quality defense.
Additionally, Call has done a solid job at the plate, hitting .246 with an 88 OPS+. These numbers are not stellar, but as a backup bat, it is more than good enough.
He tends to hit well against lefties, averaging .326 from the plate this year, making him valuable in a platoon.
However, the Dodgers’ outfield depth, from top to bottom, is fantastic, and they are facing a roster crunch with some top prospects over the winter.
With plenty of players who can play in the outfield, players like Call become expendable, and there has already been chatter about him possibly being dealt.
According to The Athletic’s Katie Woo, Call is a player that the Dodgers could shop if they feel inclined.
“Left-hander Eric Lauer and outfielder Alex Call are two names the Dodgers could shop, according to multiple league sources familiar with the team’s thinking, who were granted anonymity in exchange for their candor,” Woo wrote.
Who wants to trade for Alex Call?
Now that Kike Hernandez is back, Call looks to be less vital, especially now that Tommy Edman is back as well.
The good news for the Dodgers is that there is a team looking for outfield help. Per Pat Ragazzo of Athlon Sports and Baseball America, the Minnesota Twins are said to favor Call.
“The Minnesota Twins are a fit for Call and are said to like him,” Ragazzo reports.
The Dodgers could ask for a prospect or two in exchange for Call. It likely won’t be anyone top-tier, but LA is great at finding undervalued prospects from other teams and bringing them into the fold.
They could specifically use catchers, non-first-base infielders, and more pitching talent.
