Detroit Tigers Trade Jahmai Jones to Red Sox

The Detroit Tigers have officially moved on from Jahmai Jones.

Just days after designating the veteran outfielder for assignment, the Tigers have traded Jones to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later. The move gives Jones a fresh opportunity while allowing Detroit to receive an asset rather than risk losing him for nothing.

Jones Gets a Fresh Start in Boston

The Red Sox announced Tuesday that Jones has been added to their roster. Boston optioned infielder Nate Eaton to Triple A Worcester to make room on the active roster, while Jones fills an open spot on the club’s 40 man roster.

Because Jones is out of minor league options, Boston will keep him on its Major League roster.

The 28 year old now gets another chance to prove he can be a valuable contributor after struggling to find consistency with Detroit this season.

A Tale of Two Seasons

Jones was one of the Tigers’ most productive role players in 2025 after joining the club in June.

He appeared in a platoon role and flourished against left handed pitching, batting .287 with a .387 on base percentage and a .550 slugging percentage over 150 plate appearances. His impressive offensive production made him one of Detroit’s most effective complementary hitters during the second half of the season.

This year, however, the production never returned.

Jones hit just .137 with a .219 on base percentage and a .221 slugging percentage across 105 plate appearances. While he continued to receive most of his opportunities against left handed pitchers, his strikeout rate climbed significantly and his offensive numbers dropped well below last year’s pace.

Why the Tigers Made the Move

Detroit designated Jones for assignment last week after roster decisions left him without a clear role. Since he had no minor league options remaining, the Tigers could not simply send him to Triple A.

Rather than lose Jones through waivers, Detroit found a trade partner in Boston and will receive a player to be named later.

For the Tigers, the move clears additional roster flexibility as they continue to shape their roster for the second half of the season. For Jones, it offers a chance to rediscover the form that made him such an important piece of Detroit’s lineup just one year ago.
