Former England Test captain Ben Stokes stunned the cricketing world last month when he announced his international retirement in the middle of the third and final Test against New Zealand.
Stokes’ decision came in the aftermath of considerable controversy, having missed the second Test of the series entirely following a bar brawl incident that unfolded after England’s win in the series opener.
Despite returning for the final match, Stokes dropped his bombshell announcement on the fourth day of the series, catching virtually everyone in the sport off guard.
The ending was not perfect for the star all-rounder as New Zealand clinched the contest 2-1 by staging a comeback in the series.
Stokes was under fire since England’s embarrassing loss to Australia last winter in the Ashes away from home. Things only got worse after the loss against the Black Caps as Stokes finally decided to end his journey in international cricket.

It has been less than two months since Ben Stokes announced his international retirement. The all-rounder is currently enjoying his well-earned free time and is also preparing to play franchise T20 cricket across the globe.
He has already been linked with a move to the Big Bash League, where he could become the league’s most expensive player ever.
Other than continuing his professional career, Stokes has also started preparing for life after his cricket journey is over.
In a recent conversation with former teammates Stuart Broad and Jos Buttler on the For the Love of Cricket podcast, Stokes revealed his future plans of coaching the England cricket team someday.
He said: “I’m doing my level three coaching now while I’m still playing, because I want, when the day comes that I’m not playing any more, I’d love to be able to have all that stuff signed off and done.
“I know what I want to do in terms of staying within the game, which is to be a coach. And would I love to be coach of England one day? Absolutely. I just really like the idea of being, again, like, in some form of leadership away from playing.”
A new era in English cricket
With Ben Stokes retired and Brendon McCullum relieved of his duties as England’s Test coach, the much-hyped ‘Bazball era’ of England cricket has ended.
It was one of the most talked-about styles of approaching Test cricket in recent years and it divided opinions across the world. While purists were strictly against the approach of playing quickfire knocks in the longest format, many hailed it as a revolutionary vision which would have retained the interest of the next generation of fans in the Test format.
Nonetheless, the Bazball era is past now and a new era is upon English cricket with Stephen Fleming and Joe Root taking charge of the team as coach and captain, respectively.
The new era kicks off later this month with England hosting Pakistan for another home Test series and their final one this summer.
