Christian Gonzalez wants to remain with the New England Patriots, but the star cornerback sounds increasingly frustrated with the lack of progress toward a contract extension.
Gonzalez addressed his uncertain future following Tuesday’s practice in Foxboro. The 24-year-old acknowledged his disappointment while attempting to shift his attention toward New England’s regular-season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
“It’s frustrating, but I’m focused on the season. I’m focused on here now,” Gonzalez told reporters, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
The Patriots have publicly identified Gonzalez as one of their most important players. However, the two sides have spent months negotiating without reaching an agreement.
Gonzalez Shifts Attention Toward Week 1
Gonzalez is eligible for an extension for the first time after New England selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The cornerback missed much of the Patriots’ voluntary offseason program before saying at mandatory minicamp that he hoped to be “rewarded as a Patriot.” With the regular season approaching, Gonzalez suggested he no longer wants the negotiations to consume his attention.
“I’m focused on Week 1 at this point,” Gonzalez said, per Reiss. “I mean, it’s been all offseason, so I feel like the line of today is, ‘It is what it is.’”
Gonzalez is under contract for two more seasons. He is scheduled to earn $2.259 million in 2026 before his salary increases to $18.11 million under the fifth-year option in 2027. That gives the Patriots contractual control, but waiting could make Gonzalez considerably more expensive.
Seattle recently signed Devon Witherspoon to a four-year, $132 million extension. Witherspoon and Gonzalez were both first-round picks in 2023, and they share the same agent, Reggie Johnson.

Patriots Insist Gonzalez Remains A Priority
Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said Tuesday that negotiations have gained “momentum.” He also reiterated that New England wants to retain Gonzalez for the long term.
“We want him here. He’s an elite player,” Wolf said, according to ESPN. “I’ve been on record saying that before, and we’re continuing to work with his representation to find a resolution that works for everyone.”
Patriots owner Robert Kraft said at the beginning of training camp that the organization had made an offer that would make Gonzalez the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback. Wolf maintained Tuesday that the offer would still accomplish that goal. Gonzalez indicated there is more nuance to the negotiations than the potential average annual value.
“There’s certain things that go into a contract, but my team knows what we want, so it kind of depends how you put it,” Gonzalez said.
The Patriots cornerback returned to practice Monday after being sidelined since Aug. 10. Gonzalez appeared to suffer an injury after landing hard in the end zone and subsequently missed New England’s joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts and Philadelphia Eagles. He declined to say whether his absence was strictly injury-related or connected to the negotiations.
Gonzalez now appears ready to turn his attention toward Seattle and the Super Bowl LX rematch on Sept. 9. His comments nevertheless added pressure on the Patriots to resolve the situation before one of their franchise cornerstones becomes even more frustrated.
