The Philadelphia Eagles appear to have an unexpected contender emerging in their competition for the final linebacker spots.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio offered an unsolicited endorsement of Chance Campbell on Wednesday, calling the veteran a good football player and warning observers not to overlook his chances of making the 53-man roster.
“Don’t sleep on Chance Campbell,” Fangio said.
That is a significant statement from a coach who generally avoids giving public praise without purpose. Campbell entered training camp behind Zack Baun, Jihaad Campbell and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Philadelphia’s linebacker hierarchy, but Fangio’s comments indicate that his roster case has become much stronger than his place on the depth chart might suggest. The Eagles signed Campbell shortly before their 2025 preseason finale and retained him on the practice squad. He returned on a reserve/future contract in January, giving him an entire offseason to become more comfortable within Fangio’s defense.
Campbell has also made plays during camp, including an interception that drew a celebration from the defense during an early practice. At 6-foot-2 and 232 pounds, he has the size and experience to provide depth at both inside linebacker spots. The former Ole Miss standout was selected by Tennessee in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL draft. Injuries limited his opportunities with the Titans, and he has appeared in four regular-season games, recording three defensive tackles.
His clearest path to the roster will involve special teams. Reserve linebackers must contribute in the kicking game, particularly as Philadelphia decides whether to keep four or five players at the position.
