The 2026 MLB regular season has come and gone, and the Toronto Blue Jays, the reigning winner of the AL pennant, will not be getting a chance to compete for a World Series title. On Sunday, they at least finished a disappointing 79-83 season with a 5-1 victory in front of their fans at Rogers Centre — with George Springer being particularly emotional about his potential final game for the Blue Jays.
Springer signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Blue Jays prior to the 2021 MLB season, and that pact of theirs is expiring at season’s end. Now 37 years of age, he is still a big-league caliber player. But the emotions he faced on Sunday suggest that he may have already had his swan song in Toronto.
According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Springer was fighting back tears during a pregame chat with reporters, and he was thanking Blue Jays fans ever so emphatically for the support they’ve shown him throughout his six-season stint with the franchise.

“I love this place. I love it here. And I’m so thankful for this opportunity,” Springer said.
For a game with no meaningful postseason stakes, Sunday was a very emotional affair for the Blue Jays as a whole, not just for Springer. Aside from the possibility that Springer takes his talents elsewhere in free agency this winter or even retires entirely from professional baseball, Max Scherzer may also have thrown his final pitch in the big leagues in a strong start that saw him throw seven innings of one-run ball.
Springer is facing possible retirement as injuries have taken their toll on him after spending 13 years in the big leagues. At 37 years of age, it truly might be time for him to walk away from the game to prioritize his family. He already has a World Series ring to show for anyway, having won it all with the Houston Astros in their now-tainted triumph in 2017.
