Many teams played very well before Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game break, putting others in relatively strange spots heading into the trade deadline at the beginning of August.
Right now, the Toronto Blue Jays are in fifth place in the American League East, thanks to the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles playing very well heading into the break.
Toronto, at 45-51, has some tough decisions to make over the next few weeks, to say the least. According to the latest, that could even result in the Blue Jays moving on from multiple players, including Jeff Hoffman, Shane Bieber, and Kevin Gausman.
“The Toronto Blue Jays dropped their last two games before the break, falling to last place in the AL East. They are 12 games back of the Rays, who occupy the top spot. The Blue Jays haven’t declared themselves sellers; however, several pitchers stand out as potential trade pieces. Jeff Hoffman, Kevin Gausman, Shane Bieber, and Patrick Corbin could all be moved for the right price,” Caleb Kerney wrote.
The idea of moving on from a guy like Hoffman, Bieber, or Gausman shouldn’t be an easy decision for the Blue Jays.
I probably wouldn’t trade Bieber or Gausman, given how good they are, but I can also understand why the Blue Jays might.
Hoffman, though his base numbers haven’t been great at times, is still a really good arm, and the underlying metrics suggest that he can figure things out.
If the Blue Jays can get a decent return for him, something like a top prospect or two, I’d probably make this trade.
