The NFL cannot resist quarterback drama. Aaron Rodgers. Dak Prescott. Deshaun Watson. Jay Cutler. The list is endless. Which is why Baker Mayfield’s contract dispute has swallowed almost every conversation surrounding Tampa Bay in recent days.
That is understandable. It is also hiding the best development at Buccaneers training camp.
Mayfield entered the final year of his three-year, $100 million contract without an extension, then publicly said he felt “disrespected” and “undervalued” after negotiations failed. His $33.3 million annual salary ranks 16th among NFL quarterbacks, and talks are now expected to wait until after the season.

That is a real problem – It just is not the only story
Tampa Bay’s defense is developing a different personality, right in front of everyone.
Free-agent linebacker Alex Anzalone has been everywhere. He has repeatedly taken away checkdowns in coverage, chased backs across the formation and created pressure as a blitzer. During Friday’s practice, for example, he reportedly powered through Bucky Irving and forced the running back backward into Mayfield.
Then there is first-round rookie Rueben Bain Jr., who has already flashed the strength to collapse pockets from the edge. Put him next to Vita Vea and Antoine Winfield Jr., and Todd Bowles suddenly has more ways to attack an offense without manufacturing every ounce of pressure.

The Bucs need that change
Last season ended without an NFC South title or playoff appearance. A faster, more flexible defense could lower the burden on a quarterback who spent too much of 2025 trying to rescue games.
Mayfield’s future will keep generating headlines because quarterbacks always do. But Tampa Bay’s season may be decided by the players making his practices miserable.
The contract dispute is the loudest story at Buccaneers camp. The new defense might be the one that actually matters.
