The Angels made a statement earlier in the season, firing general manager Perry Minasian and replacing him with John Mozeliak.
Since he took over, the Angels have made plenty of changes in their coaching—and have now shuffled their front office. The Angels promoted Matt Swanson and Michael Lord to assistant general manager positions, giving them four assistant general managers, while firing three scouts and special assistant Ray Montgomery.
“The reason for all of this is to really get an alignment of how we think about our player acquisitions,” Mozeliak said.
Swanson will take charge of player acquisitions, overseeing amateur and professional scouting. Prior to his promotion, Swanson served as a senior advisor and had also been a scouting director with the Halos.
Lord will take control of research and development, moving up from his previous position as a senior director. He will spent the next several weeks determining how severe of an overhaul the Angels need run that department, Mozeliak said.
The Angels have made some front office changes.

The Angels’ front office has an entirely new look compared to the preseason, and the team has to be feeling good with the changes to the team—especially since the trade deadline.
Several sources had the Angels towards the back of the pack in preseason farm system rankings, and smart business from Mozeliak and his team have propelled the Angels into the 10-20 range, falling on the good side of the halfway point in many of those same rankings.
Who Was Ray Montgomery?
Montgomery joined the Angels in the 2020 season, initially taking over as their director for player personnel. He became the team’s bench coach in 2021.
He remained in that role until the 2025 season, when he took over for Ron Washington, who had to step away from the team due to health issues. After taking over, Montgomery went 36-52 as the Angels ended the year fifth in the AL West for the second year in a row.
The Angels announced neither Washington nor Montgomery would take over the team after the 2025 season, but Montgomery remained with the team while Washington tried his luck up north with the San Francisco Giants.
The Angels haven’t shied away from change this year, also firing nearly their entire pitching coaching staff, so further changes could very well come before the end of the year.
