Alex Ovechkin sends message after signing one-year Capitals contract

Alex Ovechkin has ended retirement speculation by signing a one-year contract extension with the Washington Capitals. The deal carries a $4.25 million average annual value and ensures the NHL‘s all-time leading goal scorer returns for his 22nd season with the franchise.

The Capitals announced the extension with a playful social media message, posting, “IT’S SO NOT O-VER, BABES‼️”

The picture, along with the message, came with a text, “His Gr8ness continues.”

Ovechkin also confirmed his decision with a message of his own.

“I’m back!” Ovechkin said, via NHL.com. “Thank you to everyone for giving me and my family the time to make this decision. I’m healthy. I love playing hockey and competing to win.”

He also made his priorities clear. “I’m excited to come back and join my teammates so we can fight for a playoff spot and have a chance to win. See you in September, DC!”

The decision follows months of uncertainty. After the regular season ended in April, Ovechkin admitted retirement remained under consideration.

“To be honest with you, I’m pretty sure it’s not my last game,” Ovechkin said. “I have to make a decision to see where we’re at: the team, family. Obviously, the family is going to support me, like my wife and kids.”

The Capitals have given Ovechkin reasons to return. Management strengthened the roster during the offseason after narrowly missing the playoffs despite allowing only 244 goals, the NHL’s seventh-best defensive mark.

This extension is about far more than history. Ovechkin remains Washington’s leading offensive threat after producing 32 goals and 64 points while playing all 82 games last season.

His leadership also remains central to the organization’s identity. At 40, he continues setting standards both on and off the ice while mentoring younger players entering the lineup.

Ovechkin already owns 929 regular-season goals and 1,006 combined regular-season and playoff goals. He also holds NHL records for power-play goals, game-winning goals and road goals.

The contract carries minimal financial risk and preserves roster flexibility. Washington gains another season from its captain while continuing to build around a competitive core under coach Spencer Carbery.

So, for now, retirement can wait. Ovechkin’s message leaves little doubt about his focus. His chase is no longer just records. It is another opportunity to lead the Capitals back into the Stanley Cup Playoffs and compete for one more championship.
