Alan Shearer says Harry Kane is irreplaceable for England

For years, England has been able to count on Harry Kane to deliver in the biggest moments. Whether it is scoring goals, creating chances, or leading the team as captain, the Bayern Munich striker has become the centerpiece of the Three Lions’ attack. But what happens when he eventually walks away from international football?
According to England legend Alan Shearer, that is a question without a good answer.
Shearer, who scored 30 goals for England before Kane broke his national team scoring record, believes the current player pool does not include anyone capable of replacing the Bayern Munich star.
“There isn’t anyone yet that can replace Harry Kane when he retires from international football. I mean when you look at who’s on the bench for England at centre-forward positions, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney. Yes, they’re good players but there’s no way anyone can go in and fill Harry’s boots because he’s very, very special. Although we’ve got good centre-forwards, very good centre-forwards, there’s no one like him that can produce what he does,” Shearer told Betfair. “That’s one thing to look at the next few tournaments. How long he can keep on doing it is another thing. Whether he’ll be still doing what he’s doing in two years’ time, I don’t know. It wouldn’t surprise me. But yes, there’s no one to come in and do what he’s doing at the minute.”
It is hard to argue with Shearer’s assessment. Kane has evolved into far more than a traditional No. 9. He is England’s primary goalscorer, a creative playmaker who routinely drops into midfield, and the emotional leader of the squad. His ability to score, create, and dictate the tempo of England’s attack is something few strikers in world football can replicate.
While Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney have both proven themselves at the club level and offer quality depth, neither has demonstrated the complete skill set that has made Kane one of the world’s elite forwards for nearly a decade.
The good news for England is that retirement does not appear to be imminent. Kane continues to perform at an elite level for both club and country, and as Shearer noted, it would not be surprising if he is still leading the line at the next major tournament.
Still, Shearer’s comments highlight a looming challenge for England. Developing the next great striker is one thing. Replacing Harry Kane is another entirely.
