The 3 worst moves the Steelers made this offseason

The offseason has been wild for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Since the minute former head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down, the front office has been working overtime to get this new team ready for the upcoming season. This goes well beyond just hiring new head coach Mike McCarthy and bringing in an entirely new coaching staff. The team has also been busy rebuilding the roster in hopes of finally breaking the playoff slump.

Here are the three worst moves the Steelers made this offseason in no particular order.

Drafting Drew Allar in the third round

Count us among those who are squarely in the camp of Will Howard as the best option to replace Aaron Rodgers in 2027. Allar is a longterm project at quarterback and after hearing McCarthy praise Howard so much prior to the 2026 NFL Draft, we were shocked the Steelers committed a high pick to Allar. Allar didn’t even look like he wanted to be drafted by Pittsburgh.

The Nick Herbig contract

We don’t include this because we don’t think Herbig is the answer at edge because he is. We include Herbig’s $100 million contract because it now creates a financial logjam at outside linebacker. The fact the Steelers seem to have no plans to trade either T.J. Watt or Alex Highsmith really makes this deal look worse just from a financial standpoint.

Drafting Gabriel Rubio in the sixth round

While we are all for taking some chances on the third day of the NFL draft, the pick of Rubio was well beyond that. Not even ranked on the consensus big board, Rubio has no film to warrant a draft pick and is a huge longshot to make the team. Meanwhile we could make a list of 10 players taken after Rudio in the late sixth and seventh rounds who will have immediate impact for their teams.
