Dabo Swinney takes tumble, remains in Top 10 of latest head coach rankings

Dabo Swinney’s ranking among college football’s top coaches isn’t as automatic as it once was.

For years, the Clemson head coach was a fixture near the top of every coaching list thanks to two national championships, multiple College Football Playoff appearances and a dynasty-like run in the ACC. While those accomplishments haven’t changed, the perception of Swinney nationally has.

That’s what made Sporting News’ latest head coach rankings so interesting. Swinney checked in at No. 10 overall, a spot that seems to acknowledge both his career achievements and Clemson’s recent struggles.

“Swinney might be the toughest coach to rank on this list,” Sporting News’ Bill Bender wrote. “On one hand, he is one of just two active coaches with multiple national championships and likely will be the next one to reach 200 career victories. On the other, the Tigers are 26-14 the last three seasons – a .650 winning percentage that does not quite measure up after a disappointing 7-6 season in 2025. Swinney remains in the top 10 – at least for now.”

That last part is what stands out.

There probably isn’t much debate about what Swinney has accomplished. The bigger question is whether Clemson is still operating at the level that made him one of the sport’s unquestioned elite coaches. Some would argue a top-10 ranking is too low given his résumé. Others might wonder if he’s receiving the benefit of the doubt based on what happened several years ago.

The good news for Clemson is that the Tigers have an opportunity to settle that debate this season.

Expectations are once again high heading into 2026, with Clemson viewed as a legitimate ACC title contender and a team capable of making the College Football Playoff. If the Tigers bounce back and return to national prominence, Swinney’s place among the game’s best coaches won’t be questioned for long.

If not, rankings like this may become even more difficult to ignore. For now, Swinney remains in the top 10. Whether that’s exactly where he belongs will likely be determined over the next few months.
