Cowboys Headlines: OC already being eyed; no Clowney comeback? Sorsby case fallout

Klayton Adams is in just his second season as an NFL offensive coordinator. But in a league where everyone is on the hunt for the next big thing, there’s already a sense that the Cowboys staffer could be a hot candidate on the head coach interview circuit in the very near future. Thankfully for Cowboys fans, his focus right now is taking Dallas to the next level.

The majority of the headlines in this Tuesday wrapup, though, focus where the team has all offseason, on defense. One fan is asking the team’s staff writers if a return from Jadeveon Clowney could still be in the works after a season in which the former No. 1 pick led the team in sacks. Things could change, of course, but it sure seems like the staff has moved on. Additionally, we’re getting early reviews on the defense from the Cowboys’ own offense, one staffer projects a major leap for third-year man Marist Liufau, and the notion of trading for Josh Sweat just won’t die.

Monday was a busy contract day, as the Chiefs finally inked both of their first-round draft picks to their rookie deals, and New England has made it official with Caleb Lomu. Things aren’t coming together, however, for Baker Mayfield and the Buccaneers. The QB entering his final year has drawn a line in the sand in Tampa.

Elsewhere, Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper is pleading not guilty to domestic violence charges in a troubling incident that could be headed for a jury trial right around the time of Denver’s training camp. The Chiefs are reuniting with cornerback L’Jarius Sneed, and both Josh Sweat and Jacoby Brissett are present at Cardinals minicamp despite swirling uncertainty about the long-term status of both.

But it’s the case of Brendan Sorsby that dominated the news Monday. The Texas Tech quarterback has been granted permission to play for the Red Raiders this season despite a serious gambling history, even involving bets on teams he was playing for. While it now means teams like the Dolphins, Cardinals, and (reportedly) even the Eagles likely won’t have the chance to take Sorsby in the NFL’s supplemental draft, the fallout in the college ranks is likely just beginning. Georgia and Nebraska have already banned their teams from playing Texas Tech- in any sport- and more high-profile programs could follow suit.
