Gastonia Ghost Pepper baseball seeks return to winning ways. Here's why

After flirting with Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) history, the Gastonia Ghost Peppers begin the week looking to get back to their winning ways.
The Gastonia baseball club starts a six-game set against the Lexington Legends on a five-game losing streak. Being played at Legends Field in Lexington, Kentucky, it comes on the heels of five losses in six games at CaroMont Health Park to the Lancaster Stormers, the ALPB North Division’s top team.
Here’s a brief look at the week that was for the Ghost Peppers.
Tuesday, June 2
Gastonia 11, Lancaster 2: The Ghost Peppers pounded out 17 hits, allowing the club to tie an ALPB record with their 14th consecutive victory.
Justin Wylie was 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs, with Jack Reinheimer contributing three hits as well. Anthony Prato, Bryson Brigman and Chris Proctor added two hits of their own, while Chandler Seagle also hit a home run. Ethan Lindlow went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Wednesday, June 3
Lancaster 3, Gastonia 1: Five Lancaster pitchers stifled the Gastonia lineup, allowing one run on three hits with seven strikeouts, snapping the Ghost Peppers’ for an ALPB record 15th consecutive win.
Jack Reinheimer had an RBI base hit, while Chris Proctor had a hit and scored Gastonia’s only run. Jace Rinehart also contributed a base hit. Spencer Adams was the hard-luck loser, allowing one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Thursday, June 4
Lanccaster 14, Gastonia 3: Lancaster scored 10 runs in a span of three innings, sending the Ghost Peppers to their second loss in a row.
Gastonia pitchers had no answer for the top of the Stormer lineup, the trio of Jeremy Arocho, Tyler Miller and Joseph Carpenter combining for seven of the team’s 13 hits. Luke Albright went seven innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts. Bryson Brigman was the lone bright spot for the Ghost Peppers, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs.
Friday, June 5
Lancaster 5, Gastonia 3: Lancaster scored the game’s first five runs, a gap too wide for Gastonia to make up on the way to its third straight loss.
The Ghost Peppers’ only runs came on a three-run homer by Grant Lavigne in the sixth inning. Bryson Brigman led Gastonia with two hits. However, it only mustered four other base runners in the game, one of them wiped out by a double play.
Saturday, June 6
Lancaster 9, Gastonia 8: An RBI base hit by Lancaster’s Tyler Miller broke an 8-all tie, sending the Ghost Peppers to their fourth consecutive loss. The teams combined for 30 hits and 18 runners left on base in the game.
Despite the loss, Nate Scantlin and Grant Lavigne had a solid outing at the plate. Lavigne was 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs, while Scantlin was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a solo home run.
Sunday, June 7
Lancaster 17, Gastonia 5: The Ghost Peppers ended their home stand on a down note, taking it on the chin in a loss to Lancaster. The Stormers scored 10 runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
Trendan Craig was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, while Nate Scantlin and Grant Lavigne added two hits of their own. It was Gastonia’s fifth loss in a row, this following a 14-game win streak.
Where are the Ghost Peppers in league standings?
Through 42 games, Gastonia has a 24-18 record. The Ghost Peppers are four games behind the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (28-14) in the ALPB’s South Division.
Ironically, the team is currently better away from its home digs at CaroMont Health Park. The Ghost Peppers are 10-11 at home, while they are 14-7 on the road.
