The San Antonio Spurs have defeated the New York Knicks 115-111 in Game 3 of the NBA Finals. This Spurs win spoiled the 27 year party at Madison Square Garden. The series is now a 2-1 lead for the Knicks. The Spurs winning tonight guarantees another game in San Antonio.
The Spurs were able to survive the almost must win scenario. Had the Knicks won, Friday’s game would have been an elimination game. The Knicks would have had an excessive amount of momentum going into Game 4. They would have seemed virtually unbeatable as their playoff win streak would have extended to 14 games. As it were, the Spurs were able to stop that win streak at 13 games.
This was a competitive game, but the numbers reveal a shift. The only question is can the Spurs keep this up or will the Knicks make adjustments for Game 4. The Spurs led in FG%, but not FT% and 3P% was dead even. The Spurs won the turnover battle, assists, steals, blocks and committed five less turnovers. However, the Knicks out rebounded the Spurs and had more points off turnovers.
Individual statistics were close. Both teams got over 75 points from their starters. Wembanyama and Brunson had performances that met expectations. The second highest scorers on each team should not be a surprise (Castle-SAS, Anunoby-NYK). However, is the secondary stats, there are some clues. Wemby shot 61% from the floor while Karl Anthony Towns only shot 40%. Neither Wemby nor KAT put up the rebounding totals fans have come to expect.
This result gives San Antonio some life, but the loss does not dramatically impact the Knicks. If they can minimize Wemby like they did in Game 2 and limit turnovers, there right back in this series as the aggressor. While San Antonio must find ways to build on this win.
