Hadleigh Wilson claims two titles to lead Mitchell trap shooting at state tournament

Jun. 8—ABERDEEN — Highlighted by a pair of Class 2A individual state titles won by Hadleigh Wilson, the Mitchell High School team put forward a solid showing at the South Dakota High School Clay Target League state tournament.

Wilson, a freshman, converted 94 targets out of a possible 100 to win the trap shooting varsity female division, finishing five targets ahead of three shooters at 89, including MHS teammate Brooke Ver Hey, who took fourth place. Harrisburg’s Sophia Vant Hul and Yankton’s Cierra Cameron were second and third, respectively.

As the lone competitor in the junior varsity female division for the skeet discipline, Wilson claimed her other title with a score of 77. Last season, Wilson earned the junior varsity female trap and novice female skeet championships, as well.

Mitchell’s Trinity Wilson won the skeet varsity female division with a score of 79, one target better than the 78 posted by runner-up Claire Griffith, of Lyman.

In the trap novice female division, Mitchell’s Haley Hauck (70) was third, as Pierre’s Ann Tjeerdsma (76) topped the standings.

For the trap varsity male division, Chance Henkel was Mitchell’s top finisher in the varsity male division, shooting a 93 to take eighth place. Mason Fosness (91) also tied for 16th in the field of 146 shooters. Deuel/Deubrook Area’s Dalton Moorhouse claimed the state title with a score of 98.

As a team, Mitchell finished third in the Class 2A varsity team standings with a score of 455, just five targets back of team champion Platte-Geddes at 460. Factoring into the team score were Hadleigh Wilson, Chance Henkel, Mason Fosness, Brooke Ver Hey and Devin Henkel. All five were in the top-40 out of 163 total marksmen. Hadleigh Wilson and Chance Henkel each earned a 25-straight award.

In the skeet standings, Mitchell’s Matthew Peterson and Fosness each shot an 88 to end in 14th and 16th, respectively, in the varsity male field of 48 shooters. Belle Fourche’s Nathan Bowers won the state title with a mark of 96.

Kyler Mayer (81) was Mitchell’s top skeet junior varsity male finisher, coming in seventh, as Britton-Hecla’s Dane Horter (84) ended atop the leaderboard.

With a score of 460, a five-shooter average of 92, Platte-Geddes won the Class 2A team trap shooting state championship, edging out Pierre (458) and Mitchell (455). It’s the third year in a row Platte-Geddes has ended atop the Class 2A standings.

Leading the effort, Owen Feiok (95) and Jack Feiok (94) were fifth and sixth in the individual varsity male standings. Also included in the team total were Hunter Crosby (92), Holdyn Gallagher (90) and Remington Meyerink (89).

Platte-Geddes also took third in the junior varsity teams standings, as Marlee Meyerink won the junior varsity female division with a score of 84, and teammate Shaylene Van Zee (83) was third. Jordan Ruen (87) was P-G’s top junior varsity male.

Of note, Kimball’s Carter Konechne narrowly missed out on the Class 2A trap junior varsity male state title. Konechne and Edmunds Central’s Isaiah Heilman each scored a 93, but Heilman’s reverse run was 11 to Konechne’s 10, deciding the championship. Evan Westendorf, also of Kimball, was fourth with an 89.

Kimball was also third in the novice team standings.

* Winner/Colome’s Payton Sargent finished in second place for the Class 1A trap varsity female division after shooting a 93, while Ethan’s Emily Gades was third at 92. Hot Springs’ Zetta Kuhl notched a 99 to win the competition.

* Chamberlain’s Kyryn Biggins and Evelyn Bunker each hit 84 targets in the Class 1A trap junior varsity female division, with Biggins getting the nod for first place with a longer reverse run. Kenzie Randall, also of Chamberlain, topped the novice female division with a score of 75, and Ethan’s Anneliese Scheetz (74) was second.

* In the Class 1A trap varsity male competition, Belle Fourche’s Gage Whitehead shot a 99 to finish just ahead of four shooters who reached 98. Included in that quartet was McCook Central’s Hunter Sieverding, who slotted into fifth place. Chamberlain’s Chase McQuirk and Winner/Colome’s Ryken Kaup each shot a 97 to end in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

* Lyman’s Gabe Smith shot a 97 to win the Class 1A trap junior varsity male division by seven targets over second place. Fellow Lyman shooter Leif Henriksen checked in atop the novice male division at 87, with McCook Central’s Hunter Thompson (84) in third.

* In the skeet male varsity division, Chamberlain’s Chase Hansen and Kimball’s Chevy Fees each connected on 95 targets, with Hansen’s reverse run of 39 giving him the nod for second place over Fees in third. Hansen and Fees were two of six shooters in the skeet competition to earn a 25-straight award.

* Chamberlain’s Kali Randall and Evelyn Bunker were first and second in the skeet novice female division with scores of 76 and 73, respectively. The pair were the top two overall novice shooters. Chamberlain (443) was second to Belle Fourche (462) in the overall team skeet standings.

* For the 5-stand discipline, Tripp-Delmont/Armour’s Bryson Gerber shot an 80 to take third in the varsity male division. Stanley County’s Witt Myers (83) won the competition, with Belle Fourche’s Tacen Carr (82) in second. TDA (381) was third on the overall team 5-stand leaderboard behind only Belle Fourche (391) and Stanley County (389).
