Mavericks had 'exploratory conversations' with Duke head coach Jon Scheyer

After the Dallas Mavericks parted ways with their coach of five seasons (Jason Kidd), rumors began to surface surrounding Duke head coach Jon Scheyer. Considering his experience working with current Mavericks star Cooper Flagg, many media members around the league floated the idea of Scheyer leaving the Blue Devils in favor of the Mavericks. NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer confirmed the speculation earlier this week, reporting that the Mavericks have held an “exploratory conversation” with Scheyer about the opportunity.
However, Scheyer isn’t the only college coach Dallas has contacted. Stein and Fischer also noted that the Mavericks reached out to Michigan head coach Dusty May. Lastly, the duo stated it “remains to be seen” whether each coach would leave their collegiate programs, which rank among the highest in the nation.
Taking into account the NBA’s offseason timeline, which includes the 2026 NBA Draft (June 23) and free agency (July 1), either coach would likely have to come to a decision on the role in the coming weeks.
