With Manchester United pondering another mid-season managerial appointment, Fabrizio Romano confirms Fabian Hurzeler is one of the names thrown in the hat.

Michael Carrick enjoyed a stellar start to his reign after taking over from Ruben Amorim in January. The 45-year-old led the team to a comfortable third-place finish, thus securing Champions League qualification.

The former Man Utd midfielder thus earned himself a permanent contract. However, the club’s woeful start to the new campaign is putting his job under increasing scrutiny.

Man Utd currently find themselves 13th in the league table, having only registered one win in six Premier League outings. They also suffered an embarrassing elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton despite taking an early two-goal lead.

Speaking of the Seagulls, they have been the main Dark Horses of the new campaign, registering sensational results between domestic competitions and the Conference League.

Therefore, Hurzeler has been highly praised for his ‘meticulous’ work at the club, undoubtedly attracting the interest of several top clubs.

In the latest video uploaded on his YouTube channel, Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that one Man Utd official has been advocating for the 33-year-old.

“There is one specific person in the Manchester United leadership group, who really appreciates Fabian Hürzeler,” said the transfer market guru.

“He is bringing his name into the conversation when they talk about the managerial situation and talented managers.”

Nevertheless, Romano clarifies that the decision to sack Carrick has yet to be taken, so these internal talks are only precautionary so that the club isn’t caught unprepared in case they decide to take drastic measures in the coming weeks.

Moreover, the journalist insists that United have yet to make any contact with Hurzeler or his entourage, while also naming three other candidates in Antonio Conte, who has already expressed his openness to return to management in mid-season, plus the currently unattached Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe.

Two years ago, Man Utd sacked Erik ten Hag and convinced a young manager to abandon his successful project mid-season to oversee the chaos at Carrington.

In hindsight, this proved to be a misstep in Ruben Amorim’s managerial career, although he managed to land the AC Milan job in the summer.

Hurzeler represents an even younger profile (33), albeit with Premier League experience, having coached Brighton for almost 100 games since joining the club in 2024.

At this stage, it feels that United are crying out for a highly experienced manager with a proven track record and the ability to squeeze the best out of underperforming players. Hence why Conte would arguably be the most suited for the role, at least amid the current circumstances.
