The Atlanta Falcons endured a heartbreaking 30-23 overtime loss against the Baltimore Ravens in their Week 5 matchup on Sunday night. However, the loss was not Atlanta’s only setback, as starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. suffered a rib injury late in the fourth quarter. Now, an update on his condition has emerged.
Following the game, Penix Jr. offered some reassurance, saying that he does not expect the issue to keep him sidelined for an extended period.
“What I am going through right now I know its not something that is going to be a long-term thing. But today, it took me out for the last couple of minutes of the game, but I’ll be alright,” Penix Jr. said.

Penix absorbed a hard hit in the fourth quarter and remained on the ground while athletic trainers rushed over to examine him. Though he eventually walked off the field without assistance, Atlanta had to temporarily turn to Tua Tagovailoa while its starting quarterback received medical attention.
Concerns grew when Penix was diagnosed with a rib injury and listed as questionable to return. As the game headed into overtime, he stayed on the sidelines, leaving Tagovailoa to take charge of the Falcons’ offense.
Tagovailoa initially sparked some hope for Atlanta by connecting with Drake London for a significant gain. However, his next pass was intercepted by Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton, ending the Falcons’ possession and sealing Baltimore’s victory.
Before the injury interrupted his night, Penix had delivered a solid performance against Baltimore’s defense. The Falcons quarterback completed 19 of his 32 passing attempts for 240 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game.
Penix’s rib injury has now emerged as a major concern for Atlanta as the team prepares to face the Chicago Bears in its next matchup. The Falcons will need to assess his condition and track his recovery before deciding whether he will be available to return to action.
