In his first at-bat since becoming an American citizen, Cincinnati Reds slugger Eugenio Suárez got a new walk-up song.
When he stepped to the plate in the second inning, Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless The USA” began playing throughout Great American Ball Park.
The music change was orchestrated by his teammates after Suárez left the team earlier this week to take the U.S. naturalization test in Miami and ultimately passed to become an American citizen.

“It’s very, very cool,” Reds manager Terry Francona told reporters Sept. 4. “He was excited and he should be. It’s very neat.”
Prior to the Reds-Brewers matchup, Suárez had an American flag draped over his locker along with a red, white and blue cowboy hat.
Suárez worked a walk against Milwaukee starter Shane Drohan, then scored two batters later on Matt McLain’s go-ahead two-run homer.
In his next at-bat in the third inning, “God Bless the USA” played again and Suárez launched a three-run home run to put the Reds up, 6-4. It was Suárez’s 210th career homer as a Red, tying him with Ken Griffey Jr. for ninth most in team history.
