Reports from the New York Giants camp early on are that the offense is struggling against the defense, according to Dan Duggan of The Athletic.
But Giants head coach John Harbaugh doesn’t seem all that concerned about the offense’s earlier struggles. It’s often expected that the defense is ahead of the offense early in camp.
Duggan says that Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy have challenged Dart to run a more traditional offense than he did last year under Brian Daboll, who basically let him run the type of offense he ran in college at Ole Miss.
They want him to play more under center than in the shotgun, which apparently has been quite an adjustment for him.
Yet despite the struggles, Harbaugh praised his QB.
“You can’t even imagine how much there is for a quarterback to operate with, especially in a new offense,” Harbaugh said. “He’s done an outstanding job. There’s so much on his plate. He’s pushing the envelope. He’s also competing at the same time. He’s a fiery guy. I’m very impressed.”
Harbaugh seems to want to return to more emphasis on the run game and the defense.
What should help Dart is the return of wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Cam Skattebo, both of whom are returning from season-ending injuries last year.
“He’s generally on schedule,” Harbaugh said of Nabers. Duggan added, “The Giants are taking it day-to-day, determining Nabers’ workload based on how he feels each day. With six weeks until the season opener against the Cowboys, it’s hard to imagine Nabers not being ready barring a setback.”
It might take a while for the offense to get into a groove and a new style of play before they are comfortable with the new offensive plays they will be running this season.
