Detroit — Jack Flaherty got the news Tuesday that he didn’t want to hear.
His stay on the injured list won’t be minimal.
“It’s going to be more than the minimum,” manager AJ Hinch said.
The minimum would be 15 days. But the discomfort and inflammation in his right flexor tendon hasn’t quieted down in the nine days since he left his start at Wrigley Field after four innings.
“We’ve gotten to the bottom of what this is,” Hinch said. “Now everyone is weighing in on when he can start his regimen, from the rehab to the short toss to long toss to the mound. It’s going to take longer than 15 days. Until he starts throwing, we can’t really map out what that’s going to look like.
“The good news is, the treatment he’s been doing has alleviated some of the immediate sensations he was feeling and that’s going to lead to him starting to build up strength and doing those exercises so he can get back to throwing.”
The earliest Flaherty could come back is Aug. 5. More realistically, it will be sometime after the Tigers get back from their three-city trip to Sacramento, Seattle and San Francisco.
In other injury news:
▶ Outfielder Kerry Carpenter on Tuesday got a cortisone shot in his left foot to ease the inflammation from plantar fasciitis. “If that sounds awful, it probably is,” Hinch said. Carpenter will be held out of any activity for at least a couple of days while the cortisone goes to work. Once the inflammation is gone, Hinch said he will be able to get back to some baseball activity.
▶ Right-hander Jackson Jobe (Tommy John surgery) threw a bullpen at Comerica Park on Tuesday and is on track to make his next start with Triple-A Toledo in Columbus this weekend.
▶ Left-hander Brant Hurter (lumbar spine inflammation) threw a bullpen on Monday. He’s slowly progressing toward a rehab assignment.
▶ Outfielder Wenceel Perez (orbital bone fracture) is doing baseball activities in Lakeland.
▶ Right-hander Will Vest (stress fracture in right elbow) is still not cleared to resume throwing.
