Indonesian Golfer Reportedly Kidnapped at Grandmother’s Birthday Party; Police Investigating

An Indonesian female golfer, Jesslyn Wijaya Lay, was reportedly kidnapped by some men when visiting her grandmother’s birthday party at a restaurant in Central Jakarta, and police have yet to determine her location after over a week since then, the authorities revealed.
The event took place around 7:45 p.m. on Monday, July 13th, at Saung Kita Restaurant in the Mangga Besar district of Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, according to Jesslyn Wijaya Lay’s family legal representative, Andi Darti.
Just before the beginning of the song for the birthday party, witnesses reported that men surrounded the athlete, blindfolded her, took her, and put her into the car, which was parked outside the restaurant, before driving away.
Some details differ in the reports. As per the first version, five unknown persons reportedly blindfolded her, put a scarf in her mouth, and dragged her into the waiting vehicle, the Jakarta Globe says.
In the version from CNN Indonesia, two big-bodied men reportedly blindfolded her and carried her to the black car.
The case has been officially filed at the Central Jakarta Metro Police under the report number: LP/B/2092/VII/2026/SPKT/POLRES METRO JAKPUS/POLDA METRO JAYA.
The investigators are still working to establish the facts of what occurred, according to AKBP Roby Heri Saputra, head of the Central Jakarta Metro Police criminal investigation unit.
As per the police statement, they were informed about the disappearance of the woman by her close friend NH on July 13th. They visited the spot, interviewed the witnesses, and analyzed the security video footage.
“The family places its full trust in the professionalism of the Indonesian National Police,” Darti says, hoping that investigators would quickly start the criminal proceedings considering the obvious evidence and statements of witnesses.
But the investigation process has some twists. As reported by the news website Detik News, the athlete was still missing as of Tuesday, and the investigators were working on a version where the athlete had left Jakarta of her own accord or got abducted.
According to the lawyer, the family had received information that the athlete was going to Malaysia via Semarang on July 14th, and that a cell phone allegedly belonging to her had been seen in the area of Puri Jimbaran; however, all such data required further confirmation by investigators.
The Jakarta Globe reports that the complainant asked the police on Sunday to withdraw the report. However, the investigators did not agree, as the investigation is still ongoing and they need to interview the victim and her family to establish whether any crime took place.
As described by Viva, Jesslyn is an Indonesian amateur golfer who participates in tournaments and inter-club championships, and the daughter of businessman Ponty Wijaya. According to Kompas, she was the winner of the Best Nett Overall award in the Chemical Golf Club tournament at Rainbow Hills Golf Club.
The investigation is ongoing; police are interviewing witnesses and analyzing surveillance video.
