The Boston Red Sox’s 13-game win streak has them back in the postseason mix, and they could be getting Trevor Story back before the end of the regular season.
“Trevor Story said he’s feeling good, taking BP and machine work. Lateral movements and sprinting is the final hurdle,” The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey reported on X on Monday. “He’s hoping to start a rehab assignment ‘sometime in August'”
A rehab assignment in August could have Story back for the final month of the regular season. Story had sports hernia surgery in May, and has been sidelined ever since. He was not playing great before his injury, but he could return healthy and playing more like the version fans saw last season.
Story hit 25 homers in 2025 and had his best season since 2021. The team has had a few different players play shortstop in his absence, and Marcelo Mayer’s injury has not made it easy to navigate the middle infield on a day-to-day basis. At the very least, Story could be a steady option at the position.
Story was hitting .206/.244/.303 before his injury. He was certainly not playing at a level that fans expected after his resurgent year, but hopefully, after recovering and a rehab assignment, he will be able to help the team make a run to and through October.
