Bo Bichette left the Toronto Blue Jays to help lead the New York Mets to the playoffs.
Instead, the Mets have stumbled all season long, and now they’re going to be sellers at the MLB trade deadline.
Could Bichette be dealt?
It’s a tricky question.
He is on a three-year, $126 million contract ($42 million per year), and it’s just the first year of that deal. Bichette does have opt-outs built in that he can take after each season, if he wants.
But has Bichette played well enough to turn down the remainder of that deal after this season? That’s a tough question.

And that makes it hard for any acquiring team to know exactly what it’s getting in Bichette, both as far as a contract is concerned as well as in his current level of play.
Want it to be even more complicated? Bichette has a no-trade clause.
He was asked by Jon Heyman of the New York Post whether he’d waive it for a deal before the Aug. 3 deadline, and Bichette was “noncommittal,” Heyman writes.
It certainly makes sense for Bichette to not just give a blanket answer to that question. There are likely some teams he would welcome a deal to, and some he’d prefer not to join.
There’s even been speculation about a reunion with the Toronto Blue Jays, where Bichette had spent his entire career before this season. It’s not immediately clear what Bichette might think of that possibility.
But man, this isn’t how anyone with the Mets saw this season going. It’s been a nightmare, and this won’t be the last time Bichette is asked about trades in the next two weeks.
