Former Lobo, new baseball coaches reshape NM prep sports

Albuquerque Academy has hired former Lobo standout player David Chiotti to join the girls basketball program as an assistant varsity coach.
Chiotti played for the Lobos in the early- to mid-2000s, and also played professionally in Europe for eight seasons. He also is a former Director of Player Development for UNM men’s basketball.
For the last five seasons, Chiotti helped Greg Brown behind the scenes with the Volcano Vista boys program, although he never was an official coach and didn’t sit on the bench for games.
NEW COACHES: Las Cruces had three of its four head baseball coaches resign or retire following the 2026 season. Two of the three have named replacements.
Former Belen coach Justin Miller resigned to become the new coach at Organ Mountain. Miller was the head coach at Silver before taking over the Eagles the last two seasons.
Meanwhile, Las Cruces has chosen Fermin Alvarado, who takes over from longtime previous coach Gil Padilla.
Las Cruces Public Schools executive director of athletics Michelle Ronga expects an announcement on Centennial’s new head coach in the coming days.
Farmington also has a new head baseball coach, and his name will be familiar to those in the know. He is Frank DeHoyos, who won nearly 200 games at Bloomfield, including a state championship in 2010. He will inherit a Scorpions program with great tradition but one that has struggled to win regularly of late.
