Tottenham Hotspur have rejected a £46 million bid from Newcastle United for Swedish international midfielder Lucas Bergvall, who is eager to leave the club this summer. Roberto De Zerbi and Eddie Howe are the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and St James’ Park respectively.

Newcastle’s aggressive pursuit comes after missing out on long-term midfield target Johan Manzambi, who joined Aston Villa despite Freiburg previously agreeing a deal with the Magpies. With significant funds available, Newcastle have identified Bergvall as their top alternative.

However, Tottenham have so far rejected every formal approach for Bergvall. This includes a lower £38 million opening bid from Nottingham Forest—who view the Swede as their top priority to replace Elliot Anderson—as well as several other undisclosed offers.

Bergvall, who recently featured for Sweden at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, has become increasingly frustrated by his limited game time at Tottenham. Restricted to just 11 Premier League starts last season, his prospects for regular football have diminished further following the high-profile arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Bergvall has made it clear he wants to leave this summer in search of regular first-team football. While Roberto De Zerbi is an admirer of his technical ability, the coaching staff acknowledge they cannot guarantee him consistent minutes.

With Bergvall under contract until June 2031, Tottenham retain full control at the negotiating table. While they are reluctant to strengthen a direct top-four rival like Newcastle, Spurs are prepared to sanction a sale at the right price. If Newcastle or Forest return with an improved offer that meets their valuation, Tottenham are expected to approve a transfer to help balance the books.
