FIFA introduces championship rings for World Cup winner

Following a tradition in American sports, the football World Cup winners will receive championship rings, governing body FIFA has said.
FIFA said that one side of the ring is to show the World Cup trophy and the other reflect the winning team’s identity.
FIFA said that the captain and coach will receive temporary rings post-match. The rings will then be customised for 30 members of the winning team and another 1,996 will go on sale wordwide.
The overall number of 2,026 reflects the year of the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada which concludes on Sunday with the final between Spain and Argentina.
The rings come on top of gold medals and the trophy for the winning team.
FIFA said that this “new symbol of triumph” is “bringing one of the most recognisable American sporting traditions to the global game.”
Championship rings are for instance given out in the NFL and NBA, and largely funded by franchise owners.
