World Cup soccer star dead at 25 days after playing in tournament: ‘A gifted player’

Jayden Adams, a midfielder for South Africa in the World Cup, has died.
He was 25. A cause of death has not been reported.
Adams’ death is being investigated by police in the Schotsche Kloof neighborhood of Cape Town, South Africa,according to multiple reports.
The South African Football Players Union issued a statement following his death.
“The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams,” the statement read. “Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction. His passing is an immeasurable loss to his family, teammates, clubs, the football fraternity and country at large. We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose Lives he touched.”
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
Bafana Bafana also issued a statement.
“Today, South African football mourn the loss of a talented player whose passion, dedication, and love for the beautiful game inspired many,” it read. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, teammates, and everyone affected by this devastating loss. May his soul rest in eternal peace. You will never be forgotten, Jayden.”
Gayton McKenzie, South Africa’s minister of sport, arts and culture said that the cause of Adams’ death “has not yet been confirmed.”
“I wish to appeal to members of the media and the public to exercise restraint and compassion, and to refrain from speculation, while his family and Mamelodi Sundowns are given the space and privacy they need at this incredibly difficult time,” he said.
