Few rivalries in world football are as fierce as the one between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Every meeting between the two clubs is defined by intensity, history and competition, but moments away from the spotlight often reveal a different side of the players involved.

That was the case after Spain’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium in the FIFA World Cup quarter-finals, when Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal was seen checking on Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois following the Belgian’s injury-enforced exit.

The interaction caught the attention of many, serving as a reminder that while club loyalties divide players for much of the season, respect often prevails when a fellow professional is facing a difficult moment.

What’s the story?

Belgium’s hopes of reaching the World Cup semi-finals ended with a narrow defeat to Spain, but the result was overshadowed by concern for Courtois.

The Real Madrid goalkeeper had once again been one of his country’s standout performers, producing several outstanding saves to keep Belgium in the contest despite Spain’s attacking pressure.

The warning signs appeared shortly after the hour mark when Courtois pulled up following a routine phase of play.

Medical staff assessed the 33-year-old during the scheduled hydration break and, although he initially attempted to continue, it soon became clear that he could not play on.

The injury immediately raised concerns in Madrid given the goalkeeper’s recent history of muscle problems, including the right quadriceps issue that sidelined him earlier this year before his return in May.

Once the final whistle confirmed Spain’s place in the semi-finals, attention shifted away from the celebrations when Yamal approached Courtois on the pitch.

The Barcelona teenager appeared to ask the experienced goalkeeper how he was feeling after the injury, a simple exchange that reflected the mutual respect shared between two players who normally represent opposite sides of Spanish football’s biggest rivalry.

There has been no official statement regarding their conversation, but the images circulating after the match offered a reminder that football’s fiercest rivalries rarely diminish the personal relationships built between professionals.
