The Toronto Blue Jays are 44-49 this season, and 2.5 games back in the AL Wild Card. While it’s too soon to decide what to do at the trade deadline, since it’s still a few weeks away, the Blue Jays have decided to make a move.

But, instead of acting as buyers and improving the big league club, the Blue Jays are actually selling an asset, right-handed reliever Tommy Nance, in a deal with the Minnesota Twins.

What did the Blue Jays get in return for what might be the first of a few sales this summer? According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, the Blue Jays got back an .855 OPS catching prospect from the Twins for the 35-year-old reliever.

Blue Jays trade Tommy Nance for 21-year-old catcher

“Blue Jays are acquiring catching prospect Ryan Sprock from the Twins for RHP Tommy Nance, source confirms. @Alden Gonzalez was on it,” Bannon reported.

This move for the Twins is an interesting one, as they are acting as buyers rather than sellers, contrary to preseason expectations. The same goes for the Blue Jays, who are selling a veteran reliever who has a 3.82 ERA this season.

But, in return for their first trade, the Blue Jays are picking up 21-year-old right-handed hitting catching prospect Ryan Sprock. He has an .855 OPS this season with 14 stolen bases, five home runs, and 38 RBIs with a .297 batting average in 229 at-bats.

The No. 239 pick in the eighth round of the 2025 MLB Draft, Sprock is an interesting catching prospect who was recently promoted to High-A.

But now, he’s moving from the Twins organization to the Blue Jays, joining a team with plenty of elite catchers ahead of him.

He’s a ways away from the big leagues, but Sprock is an interesting catching prospect who’s already shown some offensive upside and was even named FSL Player of the Month in June of this year.

It’s too soon to say the Blue Jays will be sellers, but in their first move of the summer ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, Toronto sold a 35-year-old reliever with a 3.82 ERA in Tommy Nance for a 21-year-old catcher with an .855 OPS in Ryan Sprock.
