Red Sox could become buyers, not sellers at MLB trade deadline

MORE: Ranking MLB players based on their chances of being traded this season

The Boston Red Sox have been a team under the radar as of late. All of a sudden, after firing Alex Cora at the start of the season, Boston has jumped to just 2.5 GB of a playoff spot. One of the biggest storylines in MLB right now is the Red Sox, and they are a team to watch out for in the American League, which is wide open right now.

Hottest Team in the American League

As MLB insider Bob Nightengale pointed out, the Boston Red Sox have just won their 6th consecutive game, sweeping the White Sox, and have moved to 2.5 GB of the wildcard. Previously, they swept the New York Yankees, too. This team is on a roll and is cooking right as the trade deadline approaches.

From Sellers to Buyers?

As the Red Sox began their impressive run, several players were previously mentioned in trade rumors. Aroldis Chapman has delivered outstanding performances for Boston, while Sonny Gray boasts a solid 2.61 ERA. Additionally, Willson Contreras has excelled as a hitter at first base. Being 2.5 GB, the Red Sox can certainly look at hitters to try and improve their lineup.

Red Sox Offense Cooking in July

In July, the Red Sox offense has come alive. As a team, they have a .274 batting average and an OPS above .800. Overall, they are stronger on the road (25-21) than at Fenway (17-27). The Red Sox are 10-2 with a 2.97 ERA in their last 12 games, MLB’s best record during that span.

In just two weeks, the Red Sox have picked up 8.5 games against their division rival Yankees. A few moves at the trade deadline, and the American League East can shape up into a division to keep your eyes on.

Keep an eye on the Boston Red Sox this July. They have a solid opportunity to maintain their momentum and re-enter the playoff race. If they decide to make acquisitions, adding a strong bat or some bullpen help could position this team as a serious contender for the American League playoffs.
