Red Sox may have gotten lucky with two injured players

CHICAGO — In the span of a few minutes Wednesday during the third inning, the Red Sox saw not one but two members of their starting lineup come out of the game after suffering injuries.

First, second baseman Anthony Seigler was removed after a scary collision at home plate, resulting in a right trap contusion.

Not long after, first baseman Willson Contreras, who had fouled a pitch off his left instep in the top half of the inning but stayed in the game, further tweaked the injury while playing first and hobbled off the field.

Just like that, the left side of the Boston infield was out of the game.

But it seems as though the injuries aren’t serious.

“They’re doing OK,” reported interim manager Chad Tracy after his team won its fifth straight, 5-0 over the Chicago White Sox. “Willson, when he got inside (the clubhouse) was able to put weight on it and move around a lot better. So that’s good. Seigler had a bruised trap. He kind of got hung up and slammed in his neck. He said it was almost like a stinger in football, so both of them are doing better now, so we’ll see how they come in (Thursday).”

Contreras, who’s been the team’s best hitter all season and who’s been particularly hot at the plate in recent days with eight RBI in the last three games, considered himself day-to-day.

“I’m not concerned about anything worse than a bruise,” said Contreras. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow when I wake up.”

After Contreras fouled the ball off his shoetop, the area went numb for a bit. Contreras wanted to remain in the game, but in the first at-bat in the bottom of the inning, he went to cover the first base bag and felt the pain intensify.

“I took my time to get back on the field to give it some extra (time) to feel better,” he said. “But on the first ground ball, the pain was worse. When I’m in pain, that’s the only thing that makes me come off the field. I wanted to take care of it right away and not extend it.”

Seigler was getting treatment after the game and unavailable for comment.

It will help the Red Sox that they will get the services of Nate Eaton back Thursday. On Wednesday night, Eaton completed his two-game suspension for his involvement in last week’s brawl and will be eligible Thursday, giving the Sox a full complement of 26 available players.
