Shresta Iyer urges patience with India captain Shreyas Iyer
The hard beginning of India under their new captain Shreyas Iyer in T20I cricket has put even more pressure on him, with two straight defeats to England following a 2-0 series loss to Ireland prolonging his search for success as a captain.
Amidst all the negative reactions, his sister Shrestha Iyer asked the fans not to evaluate his captaincy based on results only but to understand that there is much more to it than just victories or defeats.
Speaking on an interview with Filmygyan, Shrestha noted that her brother needs more time to be evaluated as a captain.
“Wait and watch. I know he has that in him. Things don’t work in your favour every time. It’s easy for us to comment that he’s losing as a captain. Cricket is way beyond that,” she commented.
“You don’t know how the pitch is, if it’s a bowling or a batting pitch, if he won or lost the toss. You’re only looking at his captaincy. See the matches that he won as a captain.”

‘Even Kohli, Rohit, Gill, Sachin have lost matches’
Shrestha pointed out to the critics that even all the captains of India, which include some of the most prominent players in the history of Indian cricket, have lost matches.
“When you represent India, there are a lot of things that come with it. It’s not just a good or bad captain. All the captains so far, may it be Shubman Gill, the legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar – they have also lost many matches,” she said.
In the end, she mentioned that the criticism of Shreyas has gone beyond the limit and the coming time will prove otherwise.
“If you only point out to Shreyas Iyer, may be you have a problem with him. He is a very different personality overall and he has a lot to give. And that time will come very soon.”

What next for Shreyas Iyer?
The remaining two games for India against England can give Shreyas Iyer the opportunity to ensure he wins his maiden game as the T20I skipper and turn the tables on his captaincy.
Given that the first of the five-match series ended up being washed out, followed by back-to-back losses, a tied series for India would at least help him cope with the pressure, whereas yet another defeat would only lead to further speculation.
Given that India is entering a new phase, it might be much more important how the team responds than their performance so far.
