USA vs. Belgium’s FIFA World Cup clash sets new American viewership record for a soccer game

A record number of Americans tuned in to see the USMNT’s disappointing loss to Belgium in the FIFA World Cup.
With tensions and anticipation at an all-time high ahead of the game, the eyes of the world were on the USMNT’s Round of 16 tie against Belgium.
And while the result was massively upsetting for American fans, they did tune in droves to watch their team try to advance in the FIFA World Cup.
42 million viewers tune in for USA vs. Belgium
The USMNT’s game against Belgium has set a new record in the United States. With 42 million viewers tuning in, the game became the most-watched soccer game in American history.
This stat just goes to show how popular soccer has become in the country, with this being yet another record-breaking audience to watch the USMNT play.
This tournament marks one of the United States’ best outings at the World Cup in recent memory, despite the resounding loss against Belgium.
However, it must be noted that a good portion of the audience may have tuned in following the recent controversy surrounding Folarin Balogun and Donald Trump.
USMNT’s World Cup controversy overshadows strong performances
During the USMNT’s Round of 32 fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Folarin Balogun, who scored a goal during the game, was sent off after a dubious challenge.
While many felt the call was harsh, he was set to serve a one-game ban after picking up a red card. However, US President Donald Trump intervened, calling FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
He managed to influence the organization, who would go on to suspend Balogun’s ban, allowing him to play in the USMNT’s game against Belgium.
While many agreed that the original red card decision was harsh, the intervention from a prominent political entity to reverse the decision has earned great controversy.
Unfortunately, this controversy has put a damper on what was a very strong performance from the United States at the FIFA World Cup.
