Nebraska coach Matt Rhule was hired to finally end the agonizing cycle of heartbreak in Lincoln.
He claims the program’s foundation is stable, but in college football, moral victories and “competitive stretches” do not keep the wolves at bay forever. The Cornhuskers have to win games against top-tier opponents, and the latest national projections suggest the Huskers are still waiting for that breakthrough.
According to the 2026 win-loss predictions from CBS Sports analyst Brad Crawford, Nebraska is projected to finish with a frustrating 6-6 overall record, managing just a 3-6 mark in Big Ten play.

The crux of the issue for Rhule is a glaring lack of marquee victories. Crawford points out that Nebraska “hasn’t beaten a top-25 opponent, and Nebraska plays a half-dozen of them this season.”
The model predicts the Huskers will secure enough wins to reach bowl eligibility, but expects them to completely falter when facing the conference’s elite. Without a signature upset, the program remains locked in mediocrity.

For a fanbase desperate to return to national relevance, a 6-6 finish feels agonizingly familiar.
“Competitive stretches won’t be enough in Lincoln if the win column stalls at .500,” Crawford noted. “The frustration comes from familiarity for Nebraska fans — close losses, flashes of progress and a finish that never quite matches the offseason expectations.”
Until Rhule can prove on the field that his team can finish in the fourth quarter against ranked Big Ten opponents, the expectations in Lincoln will remain tempered by harsh reality.
